Police respond after an armed robbery at a jewellery store inside Chatsworth Centre in Durban. A security guard was reportedly injured during the incident.
Chatsworth, Durban – Panic broke out at Chatsworth Centre on Tuesday after an armed group of suspects reportedly stormed a jewellery store inside the popular shopping mall.
According to early reports from witnesses at the scene, several suspects entered the mall and targeted a jewellery store believed to be Mayuri’s Jewellers. The suspects were allegedly armed and moved quickly as they forced their way into the store before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of jewellery.
A security guard was reportedly assaulted during the robbery and sustained injuries. Paramedics were called to the scene and treated several individuals for shock following the incident.
Witnesses inside the mall described a chaotic moment as shoppers and store employees reacted to the robbery unfolding inside the centre.
“It happened very fast. People started moving away from the area when they realised what was happening,” said one shopper who was present at the mall at the time.
The suspects reportedly fled the scene shortly after the robbery. It is not yet clear what vehicle was used in the escape.
Police have since launched an investigation into the incident and are expected to review CCTV footage from inside the mall as part of their investigation.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made.
The robbery has raised concerns among shoppers and business owners, particularly as malls in KwaZulu-Natal continue to strengthen security measures in response to organised retail crime.
