GBVF Case Reinstated After Being Struck Off; Internal Police Investigation Underway

A case involving gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) from Vosman, near Witbank in Mpumalanga, has been re-enrolled after initially being removed from the court roll, according to police reports. The incident occurred on August 4, and the case is now set to proceed following significant efforts by the investigation team.

The victim, a 38-year-old woman, was attacked and repeatedly stabbed by her sister’s partner, a 42-year-old man. The woman initially opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, leading to the suspect’s arrest last Wednesday. However, the case was previously struck off the court roll, resulting in the suspect’s release.

Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli confirmed that the investigation team has worked closely with prosecutors to reinstate the case. The suspect is now scheduled to appear before the Emalahleni Magistrate’s Court on September 6.

Mdhluli also noted that there were allegations concerning delays in the initial handling of the case. An internal investigation has been launched to examine the conduct of the police regarding the delayed opening of the case. The South African Police Service (SAPS) emphasizes its commitment to promptly addressing GBVF incidents and maintaining high standards of professionalism.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General Dr. Zeph Mkhwanazi, has urged the public to support the case without interference. He stressed the importance of allowing the investigative team to perform their duties without unnecessary distractions to ensure a thorough and fair process.

The SAPS remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of victims and will take appropriate action against any deviations from professional standards in handling such critical cases.
