The body of Reza Saloojee, an 18-year-old head prefect from Greenside High School, has been recovered from the Vaal Dam following a tragic drowning incident during a family outing. The recovery was confirmed by Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Kweza Nxolo on Tuesday afternoon.
Saloojee, who was attempting to retrieve belongings that had fallen into the dam, encountered difficulty on Sunday, leading to his drowning. The extensive search operation, led by South African Police Services (SAPS) divers, culminated in the discovery of his body around 4 PM on Tuesday.
Colonel Kweza Nxolo reported that the search team, which included water police and diving services from Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Sedibeng, had been working tirelessly since the incident. The divers, under the leadership of Warrant Officer CR Swanepoel from Ekurhuleni, began their daily search at 8 AM and concluded around 6 PM.
The Vaal Marina SAPS has opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning. The family of Saloojee was present at the scene when the body was recovered.
Major General Fred Kekana, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing in Gauteng, praised the commitment of the divers involved in the search. He highlighted that the team had recently returned from a refresher course in Durban and demonstrated remarkable dedication in their efforts. Major General Kekana also called on communities to support and collaborate with their local law enforcement agencies.
The community and Greenside High School are mourning the loss of Saloojee, and the family is receiving support during this difficult time.
