The African National Congress (ANC) has taken a bold step toward unity by recommending the formation of a government of national unity. This decision was announced by the National Working Committee (NWC), aims to address the aftermath of the party’s recent election performance, where it lost its majority by a significant margin
Sources within the NWC reveal that the ANC plans to collaborate with other leading political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), and the Patriotic Alliance (PA). Together, they will form a coalition government that transcends traditional party boundaries. This move signals a commitment to putting the nation’s interests above partisan politics.
In a related development, a high-level ANC delegation, led by Chairperson Gwede Mantashe and Deputy Secretary General Nomvula Mokonyane, is engaging former president Jacob Zuma and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party). Their involvement in the government of national unity remains a critical consideration. The ANC seeks to build bridges and ensure broad representation in the new administration.
Interestingly, the ANC’s decision to pursue a government of national unity comes after rejecting moves toward an ANC/DA coalition. Some NWC members expressed concerns about potential fallout from such an alliance. By opting for a broader coalition, the ANC aims to foster stability and inclusivity, even if it means stepping beyond traditional party lines.
ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed that fruitful discussions have taken place with the DA, EFF, IFP, and the PA. However, engagement with the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) remains elusive. Despite this, the ANC keeps its door open, reaching out to all parties willing to contribute positively to South Africa’s progress. The ANC’s commitment lies in uniting the nation and reflecting the electorate’s call for cooperation
